TA Associates (www.ta.com), a leading global growth private equity firm, today announced it has made a significant investment in Aicent Inc. (www.aicent.com), a leading provider of data network, messaging and roaming solutions to telecom network operators worldwide. Terms of the investment were not disclosed.

With over 180 telecom operator customers in more than 120 countries, Aicent provides a platform for cross-border and cross-network data delivery solutions to mobile network operators serving more than three billion mobile users worldwide. Its services enable mobile phone users to easily download data and send and receive SMS (Short Message Service) or MMS (Multimedia Message Services) messages across different mobile networks globally. Aicent is headquartered in San Jose, California with R&D and support operations in Beijing, China.

Aicent’s client base includes nine of the world’s ten largest operators, with customers such as AT&T, Verizon, DoCoMo, Deutsche Telecom, Telefonica O2, China Mobile, China Unicom and China Telecom. The company has a strong foothold in the rapidly growing Asian markets, with over 90 percent operator coverage in Asia and 100 percent coverage in China, Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, Korea, Singapore, Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand.

“We are delighted to partner with a company that has achieved such strong growth since its inception,” said Jason P. Werlin, a Senior Vice President at TA Associates. “Aicent launched one of the world’s first GRX networks in 2001, and has established itself as a global hub for mobile operators.
“The new partnership with TA Associates will help strengthen Aicent’s market position and allow us to continue to bring innovative solutions to our customers,” said Lynn Liu, Founder, President and CEO of Aicent. “TA has a proven track record when it comes to backing fast-growing profitable telecom businesses and importantly, as an investor, it has a truly global outlook.”

The markets served by Aicent are set to enjoy continued rapid growth. “The explosive growth in mobile data traffic will undoubtedly require mobile network operators to ramp up capacity,” said Hythem T. El-Nazer, a Principal at TA Associates. Mobile data traffic is projected to increase at a compound annual growth rate of 92 percent between 2010 and 2015, according to the Cisco Virtual Networking Index. By 2015, the Asia-Pacific region is expected to account for the largest percentage of monthly mobile data usage.

“Aicent’s existing product range and exciting new services in development will mean that the company remains a key player in connecting mobile networks and their customers across the globe,” said Kurt R. Jaggers, a Managing Director at TA Associates.

TA Associates has more than four decades of investing experience, focusing on profitable growth companies. TA’s prior investments in the communications sector include AboveNet Communications, Aurora Networks, FreeWave Technologies, Idea Cellular, MetroPCS Communications, Micromax Informatics Limited, SBA Communications, TARGUSinfo, TEOCO and WIND Telecom S.p.A.

PCCW will showcase the Next Generation Hotspot technology during the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain next week. More than 50,000 senior mobile industry leaders from 200 countries who attend the Congress may witness the power of the technology which enables seamless roaming between 3G and Wi-Fi networks.

The demonstration will be held at the Cisco exhibition booth at the Congress (Hall 8, Booth No. A70) between February 14 and 17. The Next Generation Hotspot technology rides on IEEE 802.11u and 802.1x specifications in conjunction with Cisco’s Wi-Fi equipment technology, Aicent’s Wi-Fi roaming connectivity and PCCW’s state-of-the-art EAP-SIM authentication infrastructure that is showcased on an 802.11u enabled Samsung Galaxy S smartphone.

Mr. Richard Midgett, PCCW’s Managing Director of Wireless Business, said, “PCCW is pleased to have partnered with Cisco for more than three years on successful commercial operations of Wi-Fi network offloading using their advanced Mobile IP, EAP-SIM authentication and authorization solution. This has enabled PCCW to provide seamless roaming between our 3G and Wi-Fi networks and offer customers an unparalleled data network access experience. This long-term partnership has been instrumental in the development of one of the first data-offloading infrastructures in the world and has evolved into a powerful pioneering force in the development and application of the most advanced Wi-Fi technology in the market.” He added, “The advanced Next Generation Hotspot technology is the first of its kind in the industry which enables our 3G mobile customers to enjoy seamless international roaming on partnered Wi-Fi networks in overseas countries. Equally, this technology also opens up our Wi-Fi services more effectively for ease of use by inbound visitors. It provides faster Wi-Fi network discovery and selection, enables the device to logon automatically and provides secure access to partnered Wi-Fi networks.”

PCCW has been operating its Wi-Fi offloading solution in its Hong Kong networks for more than three years. This seamless connectivity between its 3G and Wi-Fi networks enables customers to enjoy the Company’s innovative multimedia services, including live streaming of video and music which demand substantial network capacity, anytime anywhere. With its leadership and experience, PCCW is eminently placed to serve the needs of fast expanding customers using smartphones and tablets.

Aicent Inc. (www.aicent.com) announced today that Telcel, Mexico’s leading wireless services provider, has selected the Aicent MMS Gateway Service to provision their global multimedia message service (MMS) capabilities. Now Telcel is able to send and receive MMS messages with the more than 300 mobile operators in Aicent’s MMS network.

Telcel is employing Aicent’s MMS Gateway Service to provide advanced MMS services to its 60 million subscribers. The MMS Gateway Service enables Telcel to rapidly establish global MMS interoperability with reliable, cost-effective commercial MMS delivery and termination capabilities, enabling Telcel subscribers to easily send and receive pictures and videos to friends and family anywhere in the world through Aicent’s MMS network reach.

Telcel is Mexico’s leading wireless provider and also the largest member of the America Movil group which serves over 216.8 million wireless subscribers in Latin America. The growing popularity of MMS messaging has rapidly made it an in-demand service for global mobile subscribers, especially in Latin America. Aicent’s MMS Gateway Service allows carriers like Telcel to upgrade their messaging infrastructure to enable their subscribers to interwork with global MMS delivery, enabling global MMS message delivery with a single connection.

“As one of the region’s largest and most important telecom providers, Telcel sets a course that many of the other Caribbean and Latin America carriers will follow,” said Louie Abonador, Aicent’s general manager for Latin America and the Caribbean. “We look forward to the future as other operators follow Telcel’s lead by delivering the most cutting-edge services the mobile market has to offer.”

Aicent’s MMS Gateway Service delivers carrier-grade seamless MMS interoperability by working with the broadest number of wireless operators on the industry’s largest MMS eXchange. With a single connection to Aicent MMS Gateway Service, mobile operators can access international destinations with 2-way message exchanges without worry of Mobile Number Portability, or contractual and billing relationships with operators in foreign countries. One of the first MMS Gateway Service providers, Aicent is today the leading provider of MMS eXchange services with the widest international coverage and strongest technical know-how with full compliance with industry standards.

SAN JOSE, California – MobilityWire® – November 8, 2010

The Wireless Broadband Alliance (“WBA”), a pioneer in global wireless broadband roaming for public Wi-Fi networks, has announced that its membership numbers are swelling as 10 more influential organisations join the Alliance.

At the 18th WBA Roundtable Conference & WBA Partners’ Day in Auckland 2010, new technology members joining the alliance will include global giants such as Intel and Google, leading Wi-Fi network vendors such as Aruba Networks, Meru Networks and Ruckus Wireless, as well as the specialist roaming solution providers Accuris Networks and Aicent Inc. New operator members include NTT DOCOMO, one of the world’s largest mobile communications operators and TTNet a leading broadband operator from Türk Telekom group. These additions bring the total number of new members joining the group in 2010 alone to 16.

The Alliance now includes a unique mix of leading technology providers and ecosystem partners in addition to the leading Wi-Fi, mobile and broadband network operators from across Americas, Europe and Asia Pacific.

Chris Bruce, CEO of BT Openzone and chair of the WBA said, “All of the WBA Partners have always been united by two common objectives. Firstly, these organisations want to work together to make the Wi-Fi experience easier for the customers. Secondly, there is a real focus on creating new opportunities for 3G Wi-Fi roaming. We are excited about welcoming new partners because, with their own new perspective and expertise, they can only help us make these objectives a reality.”

Lynn Liu, president and CEO of Aicent Inc. said, “Because of its ubiquitous use around the world, Wi-Fi is evolving into an important mobile access technology for Aicent’s mobile operator customers. As one of the most important global Wi-Fi specification bodies, the WBA is instrumental in the creation of Wi-Fi roaming standards. Aicent is working with WBA members as partners in the creation of the framework for global Wi-Fi roaming. What’s more, the WBA provides Aicent an essential forum to engage in strategic industry and commercial discussions with important industry peers.”

Gilbert Little, Chairman of Accuris Networks said, “Seamless integration and roaming between 3G and Wi-Fi networks has become critical for many mobile operators. We have been working with our customer base to make data offload and Wi-Fi roaming a reality and we feel the best way to realize this in the wider marketplace is to work with Alliance. We look forward to help accelerate the adoption of the required elements within the mobile and Wi-Fi networks and in the devices to enable Mobile operators to leverage the many benefits of integrated Wi-Fi access.”

Cedric Gonin, Orange Wi-Fi Director and Co-Chair of the WBA said, “The key challenge faced by Wi-Fi ecosystem is to provide a homogeneous customer experience. This can be addressed only if the operators, device and networks manufacturers and roaming service providers all share a common objective and work together to build it. We are happy that by extending the WBA community to different kind of ecosystem players, we are now well positioned to make it happen shortly.”

The Alliance’s efforts to make Wi-Fi services easier and more secure for customers are ongoing. The most recent example has been the WISPr 2.0 trial which was launched at the last WBA event in June 2010. The trial has aimed to demonstrate how mobile, cable, WiMAX and broadband service providers can seamlessly connect to Wi-Fi networks by taking advantage of WISPr 2.0 specification. This WBA trial now includes 20 industry participants including Wi-Fi, Mobile and WiMAX operators along with roaming hub providers, network infrastructure and technology vendors. At the Auckland event, the early adopters of WISPr 2.0 specifications from the WBA membership are expected to share initial results. A number of mobile operators are participating in the next stage of the trial to show how WISPr 2.0 can help support seamless Wi-Fi connectivity and 3G-Wi-Fi offload opportunities from mobile devices using EAP-SIM authentication.

The 18th WBA Roundtable Conference is being co-hosted by WBA member Tomizone Limited from New Zealand, one of the largest providers of Wi-Fi Hotspot services in Australasia and the Pacific. At the conference, the WBA members will also discuss the roadmap for further enhancing Wi-Fi user experience, inter-operability and service delivery. The work-areas are expected to include new developments to support a seamless Wi-Fi experience, 3G-Wi-Fi offload and roaming interoperability and compliancy requirements.

The WBA’s goal is to drive wireless broadband adoption globally by developing common commercial and technical frameworks for Wi-Fi interoperability across networks, technologies and devices. Members jointly develop specifications to deliver reliable, trustworthy and seamless wireless services.

About the Wireless Broadband Alliance
The Wireless Broadband Alliance (“WBA”) was founded in 2003 by leading telecoms operators. Its goal is to drive wireless broadband adoption globally by developing common commercial and technical frameworks for interoperability across networks, technologies and devices. It helps its members to deliver quality services with consistent customer experience and reliability to the users worldwide.

The WBA members have successfully implemented commercial Wi-Fi roaming globally using WBA WRIX (Wireless Roaming Intermediary Exchange), an award winning modularised standard service specification developed by WBA. The WBA WRIX makes it easier to implement roaming between WBA members and reduces times to market for new operators interested in expanding the global roaming footprint. The WBA is also collaborating with other industry forums to further enhance WRIX and help harmonise wireless broadband roaming standards including support for Dual Mode devices and WIMAX roaming.

The WBA includes pioneers in the wireless broadband field and its 46 members include leading operators and technology providers with a strategic focus on enabling seamless Wi-Fi services across devices, technologies and networks. The current Board members of WBA are AT&T, BT, Boingo, Deutsche Telekom, Orange France, Portugal Telecom/TMN, True Corporation & Tata Communications Internet Services. Collectively, the WBA members operate over 180,000 Wi-Fi hotpots worldwide and have a pool of more than 350 million subscribers across Europe, Asia Pacific and Americas.
SAN JOSE, California – MobilityWire® – July 26, 2010

A cumulative audience of nearly 400,000 visiting soccer fans from all over the world came to South Africa in June to watch 32 countries compete in the 19th FIFA World Cup tournament. As they attended games and enjoyed the festivities they sent home pictures, videos and messages using email and messaging services, all over wireless data networks. As one of the largest eXchange service providers to enable inter-network roaming, Aicent, Inc. (www.aicent.com), recorded huge surges in network traffic during the competition, as much as 300 percent over the weeks just prior.

“As the data from our network shows, the World Cup is truly a social event where fans want to share the revelry with friends and family,” said Lynn Liu, president & CEO at Aicent. “Wireless data networks made sharing the action better than ever before as fans sent back millions of pictures, videos, tweets, emails and text messages from games in South Africa to their friends back home. Subscribers from a great number of international wireless networks were all able to use their mobile phones from South Africa due to roaming eXchanges like Aicent.”

Aicent is a leading provider of data network, messaging and roaming solutions for mobile operators globally serving more than 2.5 billion mobile subscribers around the world. Aicent operates one of the world’s largest GPRS and 3G network eXchanges, directly connecting to over 100 operators, including nine of the world’s ten largest. Aicent’s MMS and SMS eXchanges is one of industry’s largest, interconnecting with over 150 mobile operators around the world.

Aicent observed that traffic correlated directly with the number of matches taking place on a specific day; the more matches in a day, the higher traffic would spike. The day with the highest volume of data traffic was Wednesday, June 23, the day that Nigeria and South Korea played to a tie, Argentina defeated Greece, England defeated Slovenia, and the United States defeated Algeria. The day with the next highest volume was Tuesday, June 15, when three matches between Italy and Paraguay, New Zealand and Slovakia, and Cote d’Ivoire and Portugal all ended in ties.

Aicent’s data shows that Americans were among the largest group of people visiting South Africa, with more than 60 percent of Aicent’s data traffic coming from customers of GSM operators in the United States. On days when the US National Team played, these operators experienced their largest spikes in traffic, with traffic leaving South Africa far and away exceeding traffic coming to South Africa by a ratio exceeding 4:1.

Soccer fans in South Africa relied on their mobile phones to share pictures, videos, live game updates and other messages with friends back home. In fact, according to Mayan Mathen, CTO of Dimension Data, during the World Cup, South Africa became one of the highest “tweet” sources in the world, referring to the Twitter social network phenomenon. World Cup fans in South Africa averaged 750 tweets per second, with some 3,500 going out every second during World Cup matches.

SAN JOSE, California – MobilityWire® – May 17, 2010

Aicent, Inc. (www.aicent.net) today announced the availability of Aicent IPX Service, a comprehensive, next-generation interconnection solution for mobile network operators (MNOs), fixed-line network operators (FNOs), Internet service providers (ISPs) and application service providers (ASPs). Aicent’s IPX, which stands for Internet protocol eXchange, allows network operators and service providers to offer their customers IP-based voice, data and video services on 3G and 4G networks spanning multiple operators in a highly controlled, secure and profitable manner, all with guaranteed quality of service (QoS).

“The telecommunications industry is again poised for great change as more powerful smartphones drive demand for faster networks,” said Mun-Kein Chang, vice president of product management at Aicent. “The combination of all these technology advances means that consumers will have innovative new voice, messaging, data and video services delivered to them via network providers. To make the most of these potentially lucrative services and to avoid competing on price alone, Aicent IPX Service gives operators an important quality of service element – vital for delivering advanced services with optimal quality – without adversely impacting service delivery margins. Aicent has integrated all IP services onto a single network, making Aicent a one-stop shop for all mobile operators.”
