Downloads from all app stores will reach 6.67 billion applications by 2014, up from two billion this year, according to market research firm Frost & Sullivan. According to research from Gartner, 40 million smartphones were sold worldwide in the second quarter of 2009, a 27 percent gain from the same period last year. Research from In-Stat forecasts more than 100 million app store compatible mobile phones from multiple manufacturers will be shipping within five years.
