New community project is optimized for HTML5 mobile, provides stellar performance in a tiny footprint

SAN FRANCISCO – MobilityWire® – January 16, 2012

jqMobi (www.jqmobi.com), a new open source mobile development framework makes its public debut today. jqMobi is a mobile-optimized, HTML5 rewrite of the ubiquitous jQuery framework which is used on over 50% of all desktop websites. jqMobi provides stunning speed improvement (2.5X faster than desktop jQuery), size reduction (only 3K vs. 36K) and code efficiency, with a particular focus on delivering an identically high quality user experience to both iOS and Android devices. Mobile developers can join the community and download the code at www.jqmobi.com.

JavaScript frameworks like jqMobi provide common user interface and programming functions, reducing development effort and time. jqMobi includes a query selector engine, a user interface (UI) library, and a collection of plugins. On mobile devices, existing JavaScript UI frameworks like jQuery Mobile, JQTouch and Sencha Touch are all hampered by their roots in desktop Web browsers and HTML 4. Under these legacy UI frameworks, the user experience on Android-based smartphones is particularly poor. Android devices now represent nearly 50% of the world smartphone market.

“It’s great to finally see a lightweight JS library specifically tailored for smartphone performance and inspired by the popular APIs that made jQuery famous,” said Paul Bakaus, Zynga Germany CTO and creator of jQuery UI. “To me, this is the hopeful prediction of the future of jQuery 2.0, today.”

jqMobi was contributed to the open mobile Web community by the developers at appMobi.

“With jqMobi we’ve given the mobile development world an HTML5-ready jQuery,” said Sam Abadir, appMobi CTO and founder. “The truth is, the single biggest issue facing mobile HTML5 developers is the lack of good user interfaces. There is nothing more critical to the success of mobile HTML5 in general. Apple set the bar high with its Cocoa Touch mobile interface and until now, similar quality UX tools haven’t existed for Web-based mobile developers, and that is why we’ve put this project into play. We’ve started this project with high expectations, focused around delivering speed, size advantages, and cross platform uniformity, and we look forward to seeing where the open source development community takes it from here.”

Speed

jqMobi outperforms jQuery by 3X on Android and 2.2X on iOs. The JSPERF.COM test suite enables comparison of raw engine performance by testing the three most common functions: single query selector, create element and append element.

Tests were performed on various Android and iOS versions revealing that jqMobi outperforms jQuery by 292% on Android and 223% on iOS. Improvement over Zepto was 5.5X on Android and 4X on iOs. Complete details of the tests and results can be viewed at www.jqmobi.com.

Size

The jqMobi engine weighs only 3741 bytes, just 1/10th of jQuery, and less than half of Zepto. Code size is important for user interactivity in mobile because heavier pages take longer to load and to initialize. The full jqMobi library with UI code is also tiny, at just 15K gZipped. By comparison, jQuery Mobile is 62K, and Sencha Touch weighs in at 99K.

Cross Platform Uniformity

jqMobi was designed and tested specifically to provide identical experiences to users on both dominant smartphone platforms. Android has been a particular point of failure for desktop frameworks. A short video contrasting common UI functions on both platforms using each of the frameworks is available at www.jqmobi.com.

jqMobi is offered free of charge as an open source asset under the MIT X11 license, starting with a short private beta testing period which begins today. appMobi encourages interested developers to stay up to date with jqMobi development by joining the email list at www.jqmobi.com. The development of jqMobi and maintenance of the JQMOBI.COM site are sponsored by appMobi.

About appMobi
A bold proponent of the open Web, appMobi’s development tools and cloud-based services build on HTML5, CSS and JavaScript, creating a unified, open ecosystem that competes favorably with “walled gardens” offered by Apple and Google. In 2011, the company released several of its core technologies as open source, including its cross platform mobile device API, mobiUs Web browser, and directCanvas HTML5 game acceleration. In December, appMobi was named “Most Promising Tech Company for 2012” by ReadWriteWeb. appMobi’s technology allows mobile app developers to support HTML5 and native app platforms with just one code base, and to deploy and service their apps on multiple platforms, including the open Web.
appMobi gives developers ‘the gift that keeps on giving’ with open sourcing of its key HTML5 technologies

SAN FRANCISCO – MobilityWire® – November 25, 2011

In the first ever Black Friday promotion specifically for mobile application developers, HTML5 powerhouse and open Web proponent, appMobi (www.appmobi.com), today made available a host of open source code at http://www.appmobi.com/opensource for the development of mobile applications. appMobi aims to accelerate the industry’s move to HTML5 and the company believes open sourcing its considerable HTML5 development technology will serve to fast-track this effort. Included in the source code appMobi opened-up today are the company’s cross-platform XDK, DirectCanvas, and the game-changing “mobiUs” Web App Browser.

“appMobi believes that no one company should have control over what anyone can say or do on a mobile handset or tablet, and that soon the mobile Web, will be ‘THE’ Web,” says Sam Abadir, appMobi founder and CTO. “Opening up these technologies to developers not only makes the mobile Web as limitless as the imagination; it will also power the HTML5 revolution.”

appMobi’s newly open sourced technologies include:

Augmented Reality – Turns the camera view on beneath the web page so that the page can superimpose images on top of “reality”

Authentication and Encryption – Includes Oauth, the most common web service authentication for accessing web service APIs like Twitter, as well as ‘Protected Data’, so that web service API keys don’t need to be kept in the clear in JavaScript

Bar Code/QR Code Scanner

DirectBox2D – the renowned Box2D physics engine, hardware accelerated and exposed through JavaScript

DirectCanvas – enhanced graphic rendering for 2D games

Display – Better viewport for consistent visual rendering on Android and iOS devices, and orientation locking, disabling auto-shutoff of display, etc.

JavaScript Bridge APIs – Accelerometer, analytics, cache, device information, canvas, camera, display, notification, media player, authentication and encryption, geolocation and file transfer

MediaPlayer – Multi-channel sound for games, Shoutcast streaming audio player, and video playback of locally cached files for more seamless playback of things like offline videos inside web apps

mobiUs – Unique Web App Browser allowing HTML5 Web apps to perform just like native apps

Offline Caching – Web app archives for more efficient/faster downloads over mobile, and Dynamic Cache to allow the changing/storage of individual files instead of having to redownload the full web app if there is just a single file change

“appMobi is an advocate for the open Web,” adds Abadir. “By shifting from native apps to Web-based apps the transfer of power is moving from corporations to developers. Offering open sourced APIs will promote the migration of app development to HTML5 and has the potential to improve the overall mobile Web experience through faster downloads, better offline usage and enhanced mobile gaming experiences.”

This first-of-its-kind Black Friday promotion is specifically tailored for HTML5 developers. These software projects will join appMobi’s previous open source releases at the GitHub repository. Download the open source code today directly from appMobi’s website at http://www.appmobi.com/opensource.

HTML5 source code released in Black Friday push includes mobiUs Web App Browser, Cross-Platform Device APIs, HTML5 Game Acceleration, and Offline User Experience

SAN FRANCISCO – MobilityWire® – November 22, 2011

HTML5 development powerhouse, appMobi (www.appmobi.com) today announced that on Black Friday (November 25) it will open source key elements of its mobile technology to further accelerate the industry’s migration to HTML5. The newly open sourced technology will include the appMobi cross-platform device APIs, which support HTML5 development for both Android and iOS platforms. appMobi will also release the source code for its much heralded “mobiUs” browser, which allows HTML5 Web apps to perform identically to native apps. The bounty of technology made available to HTML5 developers is rounded out with appMobi’s “DirectCanvas” technology, which accelerates HTML5 canvas rendering, physics calculations and sound by as much as 1500 percent, providing native performance to HTML5-based games.

“We believe in the open Web and the importance of an open environment for mobile apps and services,” said appMobi’s CTO, Sam Abadir. “To help advance the industry’s move from native apps to Web-based apps, we are sharing our mobile HTML5 knowledge with the global software development community. Among other benefits, the innovations in this open source release will improve the mobile Web experience through faster downloads, better offline usage and dramatic HTML5 game performance increases. An improved HTML5 user experience is the ‘rising tide that lifts all ships’ for open Web mobile developers, and we are happy to pour our technology into that harbor.”

The open source release of appMobi’s iOS XCode and Android Eclipse projects will be of particular benefit to developers who want to extend existing native apps with HTML5 tabs or views. For example, a developer can easily add a photo sharing feature to a native app by mixing appMobi’s enhanced PhoneGap with Facebook JavaScript APIs. With millions of existing JavaScript components and Web services, the possibilities are limitless.

MARLBOROUGH, Mass. and CTIA Enterprise and Applications in SAN DIEGO – MobilityWire® – October 11, 2011

Bitstream Inc. (NASDAQ: BITS), today announced the public availability of its BOLT™ Mobile Browser 3.0 for Android™ phones and tablets. Previously only available through a private beta, BOLT 3.0 for Android is making its public debut at CTIA Enterprise and Applications. Users worldwide can now download BOLT 3.0 for Android for free at http://boltbrowser.com/android or Android Market.

BOLT offers ultra-fast downloads of streaming and flash video allowing users to enjoy YouTube, CNN, MTV, ESPN and more, even if the user’s device does not support Flash videos. By compressing Flash videos with new adaptive streaming technology, BOLT ensures quick and economical video playback.

“BOLT’s advanced capabilities and sleek customer-centric feature set have been in high demand by Android users around the world, and with BOLT 3.0 for Android we’ve delivered,” said Sampo Kaasila, vice president of research and development for Bitstream. “Our engineering team has been hard at work to deliver the most feature-rich browsing experience to Android users. We took all the feedback from our private beta and used it to improve BOLT 3.0 even further, adding many of the features Android users want to BOLT’s already unmatched speed. The result is a truly powerful Android browser that has raised the bar for mobile browsers worldwide.”

Today appMobi®, the company behind the most widely deployed HTML5 development tool stack, announced the immediate availability of the appMobi Chrome App Packager in the Google Chrome Web Store, adding another new web development tool to its arsenal. Combined with appMobi’s XDK (also available for free in the Chrome store), the appMobi Chrome App Packager gives HTML5 app developers the ability to create apps for the Apple, Android and Chrome app stores using a single HTML5 code base.

“The appMobi Chrome App Packager fills a very specific need in the Chrome marketplace,” said appMobi CTO, Sam Abadir. “It’s a tool that we created initially for our own use, and then we realized that everyone in the HTML5 development world could benefit from it. It can be used to package both hosted and non-hosted apps. By using the appMobi Chrome App Packager, developers also gain access to appMobi’s cloud services like push messaging and in-app purchasing, which are otherwise unavailable to Web apps and browser plugins.”

appMobi provides development tools and services that complete HTML5 as a mobile platform, bringing it on par with iOS and Android as a fully capable mobile platform. appMobi’s post-deployment cloud services include user authentication, in-app payments, rich media push messaging, user analytics and live app updates. With over 41,000 mobile apps built using appMobi technology and over 1,000 new developers from all over the world joining daily, appMobi has rapidly become the world’s most popular HTML5 development tool stack.

The appMobi Chrome App Packager is available for free in the Google Chrome Web Store (http://www.appmobi.com/ChromePackager).

About appMobi

appMobi offers the world’s most popular HTML5 development tool stack, attracting over 1000 new HTML5 developers per day. appMobi’s development tools and cloud-based services build on HTML5, CSS and JavaScript, creating a unified, open ecosystem that competes favorably with “walled gardens”. appMobi believes the open Web is a better marketplace for mobile apps than manufacturer-owned private “app stores”. appMobi’s tools allow mobile app developers to create one code base to deploy and service their apps on multiple platforms, including the open Web. For more information visit http://www.appmobi.com.

Use a single HTML5 code base to create Web apps for Chrome App Store, as well as native apps for Android Market or Apple App Store

LANCASTER, Penn. – MobilityWire® – August 3, 2011

appMobi® (www.appmobi.com) today announced the immediate availability in the Google Chrome App Store of its “XDK” cross platform app development tool. For app developers, the XDK replaces numerous platform-specific development tools with a single HTML5-optimized development interface.

appMobi’s XDK combats “fragmentation” in the mobile development space by presenting users with a single, HTML5-based emulation, debugging and cross platform build environment for mobile apps. By making the XDK available on the Chrome App Store, appMobi expects to further its dominance of cross platform HTML5-based app development.

“Most developers want to create apps that can easily be deployed to different platforms with a minimum of rewriting,” said appMobi CTO, Sam Abadir. “We designed the appMobi XDK to make it very easy for a developer to check how their app will look and feel on diverse hardware platforms.”

The appMobi XDK debugging tools allow testing with on-screen emulation, local on-device and remotely anywhere in the world without requiring ad-hoc builds or security certificates.

XDK apps can of course be deployed to websites or the Chrome App Store. Where the XDK delivers an extra treat is the ability to build the same exact HTML5 code base into native apps for placement in the Apple App Store or the Android Market.

“It’s clear that HTML5 has become the unifying technology for the mobile space,” Abadir continued. “However, creating great HTML5 apps requires great HTML5 tools and that’s exactly what the XDK is. As a ‘Web app’ itself, the XDK can also be used to create the new breed of ‘hybrid’ Web apps that perform exactly like ‘native’ apps, but do not require the approval or financial revenue share of the App Stores.”

appMobi offers a number of cloud services that provide functions that are common in smartphone ecosystems, but are not part of HTML5. These services include user authentication, in-app payments, rich media push messaging, user analytics and live app updates. The XDK is fully compatible with the PhoneGap HTML5 cross platform development project, providing many features that are missing from the open source project. The XDK runs on either Mac or PC platforms. There is no charge for the XDK development tool, and it is available today in the Google Chrome Store (http://www.appmobi.com/XDKChrome).

About appMobi
appMobi® provides highly integrated cloud-based tools and services for supporting large-scale developer communities and creating and operating complete mobile application ecosystems. By leveraging commonly used Web programming languages HTML5, CSS and JavaScript, and the open Web, appMobi’s development tools allow app developers to “write once” and publish anywhere, either in native app stores or via the Web. appMobi’s turnkey, white label platform-as-a-service offering enables carriers, device manufacturers, and brands to create mobile app ecosystems under their own brand.

The BOLT™ Mobile Browser from Bitstream Inc. (NASDAQ: BITS) has been recognized as a premier technology with a 2011 mBillionth Award (http://mbillionth.in/) in the m-Infrastructure category. In its second year, the annual mBillionth awards set a benchmark in the mobile and telecom industries recognizing mobile innovations.

The mBillionth Awards were conceived as a dedicated platform to highlight the latent potential of the mobile and telecom sector across eight countries in South Asia across 11 different categories. BOLT was awarded a 2011 mBillionth Award for m-Infrastructure, the category with the most applicants across the awards program. The BOLT browser was evaluated for its utility value, the usability of its interface, its technical specialty, its overall design, and its worldwide accessibility.

All mBillionth award nominations were deliberated by a jury made up of the best mobile and telecom experts in South Asia based on measures of innovation and creativity as well as overall growth and the nominated technology’s impact on the mobile industry and the masses.

“The m-Infrastructure award is further acknowledgement of the dedication of the BOLT browser team to extend premium browsing features to mobile handsets of all types,” said Sampo Kaasila, vice president of research and development for Bitstream. “BOLT has essentially leveled the mobile browsing playing field by bringing high end browsing features to even the most simple mobile phones, and with tens of millions of worldwide installations it’s clear to see that individual users, operators and OEMs like what they see in BOLT, just as the mBillionth judges did!”

BOLT offers end-users and OEMs a premium browser for feature phones and BlackBerry Smartphones. The browser is well-known for its flash and HTML5 video streaming capabilities, social networking integration, and an array of other advanced features that deliver a PC-style browsing experience from a mobile device, all at lighting fast speeds. BOLT has experienced worldwide popularity offering the ability to view websites in a multitude of languages including Latin-based, Cyrillic-based, and Indic-based dialects.

“We had another great year here at the mBillionth Awards and we heartily congratulate all of the winners whose technologies exemplified the innovation and creativity leading the mobile and telecom sectors towards the future,” said Osama Manzar, founder and director of the Digital Empowerment Foundation, and curator of the mBillionth Awards. “Technologies like Bitstream’s BOLT browser are proof that the mobile revolution has triumphed in South Asia.”
“Bitstream recognizes the incredible potential for the mobile Internet in India to bring connectivity to the masses,” said Ritu Varma, director of product management for BOLT. “BOLT is well positioned to help carriers and OEMs reach their goals of extending connectivity to the next billion consumers!”

BOLT is available to download for free from http://boltbrowser.com.

About BOLT®

Licensed by handset manufacturers and wireless operators around the world, the BOLT mobile browser delivers PC-style browsing with advanced features such as tabbed browsing, streaming audio and video, and integrated social networking in a relatively small application that is also the industry’s most feature rich mobile browser. BOLT is available for Java ME, BREW and BlackBerry devices and has already been installed on thousands of different handset models. With this announcement, the estimated 1.3 billion people living in India and surrounding regions will be able to enjoy the BOLT browser in nine Indic languages, even if their handset does not natively support Indic language characters.

Previously BOLT with Indic language support was only available through carriers and OEMs who preloaded the BOLT browser on supported handsets. Now end users worldwide can download the BOLT browser with Indic language support for free at www.boltbrowser.com.

Already the most fully-featured mobile browser built for phones of all types, BOLT offers users the widest variety of streaming audio and video available in a mobile browser, supporting both Flash and HTML5 video, and also includes many advanced features and social network integration, such as Twitter and Facebook widgets, often surpassing features available on desktop browsers.

BOLT perfectly renders Indic text on Web pages with support for the following Indic languages:

Hindi

Bengali

Gurumukhi

Telugu

Tamil

Kannada

Gujarati

Malayalam

Oriya

“Up until today, several million people from India and its surrounding regions have been using our free English language version,” said Ritu Varma, Bitstream director of product management. “Being able to provide BOLT in the native languages of these millions of users is a huge breakthrough, especially given that many of our users’ phones don’t natively support Indic characters. BOLT, powered by Font Technology that Bitstream is globally famous for, is able to bring the complex Indic characters to these handsets with remarkably low over the air data usage so that our users can enjoy Indic Websites and content from their phones just as they would appear on a desktop computer. This is a big advance for mobile browsing in India and its surrounding regions and BOLT is the only mobile browser that can deliver it.”

Bitstream will be demonstrating the Indic version of BOLT and previewing its forthcoming Android version at CommunicAsia (www.communicasia.com) exhibition and conference, being held 21-24 June in Singapore. To arrange for a meeting and private demonstration, contact the BOLT team at boltsales@bitstream.com.

Bitstream to showcase BOLT Mobile Browser Indic version and preview BOLT Android beta for carriers

SINGAPORE and MARLBOROUGH, Mass. – MobilityWire® – June 19, 2011

Bitstream Inc. (NASDAQ: BITS) today announced it will be demonstrating the Indic version of its BOLT mobile browser and previewing its forthcoming BOLT Android version at CommunicAsia (www.communicasia.com) exhibition and conference, being held 21-24 June in Singapore. Carriers can arrange for a meeting and private demonstration by contacting the BOLT team at boltsales@bitstream.com.

The BOLT Android version, currently in private beta, leverages the powerful BOLT Cloud Computing architecture to provide a modern, visual Web experience, better network management and new revenue opportunities to carriers.

Bitstream will also showcase the Indic language version of its BOLT browser at CommunicAsia. The Indic language browser provides perfect rendering of complex Indic characters on web pages for the following Indic languages: Hindi, Bengali, Gurumukhi, Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Gujarati, Malayalam and Oriya.

Carriers who offer the mobile Internet on low to mid-tier mobile phones face several common issues, including slow and unreliable page load times, the inability to support video, and inaccurate page rendering. Often these capabilities not only drain device batteries but also use too much data, making them too slow and expensive for end users.

”BOLT offers carriers a solution that not only allows for perfect page rendering with a fully-featured browser no matter what type of phone is being used, but also provides significant bandwidth savings over the competition with unmatched data compression,” said Sampo Kaasila, vice president of research & development for Bitstream. “For example, twenty mobile devices browsing with BOLT use the same bandwidth as one device browsing with competing browsers. That’s an impressive bandwidth savings for carriers, but even more importantly the new use cases that BOLT enables, combined with BOLT’s cloud architecture with carrier billing integration, helps carriers increase data revenues.”

With the BOLT cloud, Bitstream can provide an easy way for consumers to control their data plans and data usage directly from BOLT, without needing to call customer service, use SMS or take any other additional steps. With BOLT’s ability to easily and directly integrate with a carrier’s existing billing system, the application enables carriers to sell trial or introductory data plans to end-users and then upsell them to full data plans from within the BOLT browser app.

“BOLT can be addictive to users who enjoy the perfect, lightning fast page rendering of the Internet as it was intended to be seen,” adds Ritu Varma, Bitstream director of product management. “The ability to quickly and easily upgrade data plans as usage increases means that end users can better control and manage their budgets, reducing the customer service strain on carriers.”

BOLT’s cloud also provides increased support for optimized video streaming, an important feature to end users and another differentiator for carriers who implement BOLT into their offerings. BOLT offers users the widest variety of streaming audio and video available in a mobile browser, supporting both Flash and HTML5 video. In addition to advanced video support, BOLT’s social networking integration capabilities with Facebook and Twitter is another attractive differentiator from other available browsing solutions on the market today.

BOLT has already been selected as the default browser by wireless operators who use BOLT’s cloud computing architecture to drive data revenues, create new use cases for end users, and also to reduce infrastructure costs through industry leading, over-the-air 20:1 data compression. BOLT’s superior data compression offers the additional benefit of speedy performance on congested networks across a wide range of devices.

BOLT’s WebKit based cloud computing infrastructure integrates easily with carriers’ billing and OSS systems, and significantly reduces infrastructure costs with its best-in-class data compression. The BOLT SDK allows any service provider the ability to create custom Web-enabled applications that run on the widest possible number of mobile phones. Wireless operators, handset OEMs and service providers should contact boltsales@bitstream.com to learn more about BOLT.
