Kentrox Helps Wireless Carriers Eliminate Top Cause of Subscriber Churn

Monday, March 31st, 2008

Optima® Cell Site Solutions deliver industry’s best way to reduce wireless service operational costs and repair time while improving service quality

Kentrox, Inc. today announced the immediate availability of two new Optima® Cell Site Solutions: Optima Site Manager and Optima WAN Manager.

  • The Optima remote cell site monitoring, maintenance and management solutions deliver wireless service providers unrivaled visibility and control of their cell sites.
  • Operations, engineering and field staff will now have the most comprehensive 360 degree, real-time dashboard views of network and physical site elements and an increased ability to correct myriad problems without the need for a truck roll.
  • Optima solutions, such as Site Manager and WAN Manager, directly impact service quality – the leading factor driving subscriber loyalty – by delivering wireless operators a cost effective way to achieve faster diagnosis of problems, shortened repair times and reduced operations costs.
  • Optima Cell Site Solutions by Kentrox are flexible, highly-scalable, turnkey solutions that automate critical network site management tasks in real-time.
  • Optima gives service provider staff, from technicians to executives, the power to remotely collect, monitor, repair and report on operating data from all critical cell site network and infrastructure elements including power supply and back-up, environment and temperature, security and alarms, and wide area network performance and throughput. Even aircraft warning lights atop cell towers are monitored through Optima.
  • Optima’s unique 360 degree, real-time dashboard views of network elements and site conditions allow carriers to proactively diagnose and repair potential network problems before they have an impact on users and operating costs while substantially reducing the need for a technician to travel to the site.

The two new Optima Cell Site solutions released today feature the following:

Optima WAN Manager

  • Monitors the network for errors including issues with backhaul
  • Proactive diagnostics to prevent failures
  • Remote troubleshooting tools that cut repair time in half
  • Generation of a full strength signal to radio equipment that results in improved wireless network uptime, availability and performance

Optima Site Manager

  • Automates maintenance and management of cell site infrastructure and physical elements
  • Monitors power supplies and batteries, and can start backup generators
  • Monitors and controls environmental and heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems
  • Monitors and controls facility security including live video monitoring of site
  • Monitors and provides remote management of microwave radios, Multi-Carrier Power Amplifiers (MCPA) and multi-vendor remote electrical tilt (RET) antennas
  • Checks the status of other cell site equipment, including antenna lights
  • Today when a trouble ticket is issued, technicians have little or no data to diagnose the problem and therefore a truck must be dispatched to the cell site to determine the nature of an outage.
  • Once a diagnosis occurs, another expensive, time-consuming truck roll is typically dispatched for repairs.
  • In many cases, it takes additional trips before the problem is accurately diagnosed and fully corrected.
  • With remote monitoring and automated control of cell sites, wireless service providers can cut mean time to repair (MTTR) in half.

    QUOTES

    Charles Gerlach
Managing Director of Consulting at In-Stat

“A survey of U.S. mobile phone subscribers by In-Stat found that 47 percent identified ‘dissatisfaction with service’ as the primary reason they switched network providers, while only 15 percent cited ‘lower price,’ the second most common reason for switching. It’s clear that as wireless service penetration approaches saturation levels, network quality will become an even more critical differentiator for operators. Kentrox’s Optima solutions are comprehensive remote cell site monitoring and management solutions capable of cost effectively improving service quality by reducing outages and mean time to repair, giving wireless providers that competitive edge.”

    Ben Stump
    Chief Technology Officer at Kentrox

“Kentrox understands that network maintenance not only consumes the largest portion of a wireless provider’s operating budget but directly impacts subscriber churn rates. But consider that one in five trouble tickets results in ‘no trouble found,’ and that diagnosing ‘no trouble’ requires an average of more than two truck rolls to a remote site. You can quickly see how wireless operators are needlessly spending tens of millions every year from their operating budgets. Just as important as reducing unnecessary operations expenses is cutting mean time to repair in half. Since dissatisfaction with service is by far the biggest reason people switch providers, when there’s a problem on the network every second counts, and that’s why wireless operators will want Optima.”

    About Kentrox, Inc.
Since 1967, Kentrox has been a trusted partner of network operators and enterprises worldwide. Kentrox offers high quality, network-enhancing infrastructure solutions that reduce service provider’s operating costs and subscriber churn while increasing revenue. • GWAVA Makes Archiving BlackBerry Text Messages Fast and Simple

    Monday, December 17th, 2007

GWAVA introduces RetainTM for BlackBerry Enterprise Server, the first clientless text message archiving solution, solving compliance requirements on the popular mobile platform

Why Retain is important in the enterprise

    • New compliance regulations require enterprises to track all text communication by their employees. Unlike email messages that pass through a mail server making them easy to archive and audit, text messages are sent directly from one device to another over the networks of wireless service providers, making archiving and auditing messages extremely challenging for IT departments.
    • Retain for BlackBerry Enterprise Server helps solves this challenge by archiving text messages, letting enterprises comply with regulations for preserving text communication without affecting employees’ ability to utilize all the text messaging functionality of the Research In Motion® (RIM) BlackBerry.

    No client software needed

    • Retain is installed directly on the BlackBerry Enterprise Server and requires no client software for the BlackBerry device. Without a client, Retain does not use any memory or processing resources on the device, eliminating any impact on the device’s performance and making the solution tamper-proof by individual end-users. The server-side solution eliminates the need for IT departments to “touch” every BlackBerry device deployed, repaired or replaced within the enterprise, saving time and expense.

    How and where Retain works

    • The Retain Archive Viewer is installed on one or several workstations allowing administrators to easily audit the database. Retain works on both the common short message service (SMS) text messages used for mobile phone-to-mobile phone messaging, as well as BlackBerry-specific personal identification number (PIN) form of text messages that allow one BlackBerry user to send a message directly to another BlackBerry.
    • The Retain agent collects the information contained in the countless files of SMS, PIN and phone log information and imports them into a SQL database. Organizations can then create comprehensive audit trails and quickly and easily access this information for any necessary investigations.

    Powerful searching and archiving

    • All data archived by Retain is completely searchable down to the most granular level of detail from the Archive Viewer. In addition to its search functions, Retain can also alert administrators when certain keywords appear in real time text communication. Auditing PIN, SMS text messages and phone logs that previously took weeks to perform can now be completed quickly.

    Storage

    • Retain’s archives use a small amount of hard drive space to keep data for an entire enterprise. A medium-sized business can store its whole BlackBerry text message archive for all employees using only a few gigabytes.

    QUOTES

    Charles Taite, CTO of GWAVA

“Apart from voice, texting is the most popular method of mobile communication, so addressing associated compliance issues is of paramount concern for organizations that issue BlackBerry smartphones to their employees. This simple and fast form of communication has become a vital business tool used by virtually everyone with a mobile phone. Retain provides the means for organizations running BlackBerry Enterprise Server to ensure that they can collect and audit all their mobile text communications, not just email.”

Kathryn Weldon, Principal Analyst for Enterprise Mobility at Current Analysis

“IT departments racing to meet compliance mandates often have difficult compromises to make. Text messaging may be viewed as an essential business tool by employees, but IT departments that need to install software on hundreds or thousands of devices may opt instead to switch off such messaging functions. GWAVA Retain for BlackBerry addresses this dilemma head-on by developing a clientless, server-side archiving solution that installs quickly and brings an entire enterprise BlackBerry deployment into compliance, saving IT departments time and expense while eliminating end-user tampering.”

For more than six years GWAVA has developed security and policy compliance solutions for enterprise data communications. GWAVA solutions are in use today by over seven million employees at 3,700 medium to large enterprises in more than 60 countries around the world. • Both Aicent’s CRX and GRX services are cost-efficient solutions that enable CDMA and GSM operators to offer a high-performance worldwide data roaming services with secured private IP network infrastructure and world class support.
    MULTIMEDIA ELEMENTS

    QUOTES

Lokdeep Singh, vice president of engineering at WorldCell.

“Wireless operators understand that people depend on their mobile phones just as much when they are traveling as they do when they are in their home town on their home networks. But just as much as they depend on their phones, they also expect them to simply work when they turn them on, which is why inter-standard roaming is an essential service for wireless operators to provide their customers. WorldCell evaluated and tested a great deal of technology before determining which to integrate with our Inter-Standard Roaming service. We found that Aicent’s CRX and GRX roaming eXchange services were some of the most scalable and reliable on the market.”

Aicent SMS eXchange Service Supports Asian Languages

    Monday, September 17th, 2007

Aicent technology enables mobile operators in any country to let subscribers send and receive text messages in Chinese, Japanese and Korean.

    • Aicent, Inc. today announced support for Asian languages – such as Chinese, Japanese and Korean – in its SMS eXchange Service for mobile operators.
    • Especially important for operators serving large Asian ethnic communities outside of Asia, this advanced language support lets subscribers write text messages in Asian languages and have them accurately delivered to recipients in other countries regardless of their service provider.
    • Without such support, short message services (SMS) perceive a Korean message, for example, as having been written in English resulting in the recipient receiving an unintelligible string of characters rather than a coherent message.
    • The research firm IDC finds that 65 percent of mobile users in Asia – where country-by-country mobile phone service adoption often exceeds 90 percent – send at least one text message daily.
    • Increasingly, mobile phone manufacturers are adding multi-language support that includes Asian languages.
    • The telecommunications industry uses “single-byte” alphabets, used for English and many Western European languages, as the default character set for SMS communications.
    • Chinese, Japanese and Korean are “double-byte” languages.
    • Because each double-byte character uses twice the memory as characters in single-byte alphabets, text messages composed in double-byte languages require a different method for processing.
    • Even if both the sender and recipient’s handsets support Asian characters, the network must likewise possess double-byte language support or the recipient will receive a meaningless string of characters instead of the intended coherent message.
    • The Aicent SMS eXchange Service allows mobile operators to easily support subscribers wishing to send messages in either single-byte or double-byte character sets.
    MULTIMEDIA ELEMENTS

    QUOTES

    Danilo J. Mojica,
Head of the Wireless Consumer Division of SMART, the largest mobile operator in the Philippines

“SMART understands our subscribers often send text messages in different languages to people in other countries, and we wanted to offer our large Korean population a service that lets them send and receive text messages in their mother tongue. Because sending text messages in multiple languages to people not on SMART’s network presented us with complex transcoding challenges, we chose Aicent to power our Korean SMS service. Aicent’s SMS eXchange Service with support for Asian languages made turning up SMART’s Korean SMS service very fast and easy.”
