New community project is optimized for HTML5 mobile, provides stellar performance in a tiny footprint

SAN FRANCISCO – MobilityWire® – January 16, 2012

jqMobi (www.jqmobi.com), a new open source mobile development framework makes its public debut today. jqMobi is a mobile-optimized, HTML5 rewrite of the ubiquitous jQuery framework which is used on over 50% of all desktop websites. jqMobi provides stunning speed improvement (2.5X faster than desktop jQuery), size reduction (only 3K vs. 36K) and code efficiency, with a particular focus on delivering an identically high quality user experience to both iOS and Android devices. Mobile developers can join the community and download the code at www.jqmobi.com.

JavaScript frameworks like jqMobi provide common user interface and programming functions, reducing development effort and time. jqMobi includes a query selector engine, a user interface (UI) library, and a collection of plugins. On mobile devices, existing JavaScript UI frameworks like jQuery Mobile, JQTouch and Sencha Touch are all hampered by their roots in desktop Web browsers and HTML 4. Under these legacy UI frameworks, the user experience on Android-based smartphones is particularly poor. Android devices now represent nearly 50% of the world smartphone market.

“It’s great to finally see a lightweight JS library specifically tailored for smartphone performance and inspired by the popular APIs that made jQuery famous,” said Paul Bakaus, Zynga Germany CTO and creator of jQuery UI. “To me, this is the hopeful prediction of the future of jQuery 2.0, today.”

jqMobi was contributed to the open mobile Web community by the developers at appMobi.

“With jqMobi we’ve given the mobile development world an HTML5-ready jQuery,” said Sam Abadir, appMobi CTO and founder. “The truth is, the single biggest issue facing mobile HTML5 developers is the lack of good user interfaces. There is nothing more critical to the success of mobile HTML5 in general. Apple set the bar high with its Cocoa Touch mobile interface and until now, similar quality UX tools haven’t existed for Web-based mobile developers, and that is why we’ve put this project into play. We’ve started this project with high expectations, focused around delivering speed, size advantages, and cross platform uniformity, and we look forward to seeing where the open source development community takes it from here.”

Speed

jqMobi outperforms jQuery by 3X on Android and 2.2X on iOs. The JSPERF.COM test suite enables comparison of raw engine performance by testing the three most common functions: single query selector, create element and append element.

Tests were performed on various Android and iOS versions revealing that jqMobi outperforms jQuery by 292% on Android and 223% on iOS. Improvement over Zepto was 5.5X on Android and 4X on iOs. Complete details of the tests and results can be viewed at www.jqmobi.com.

Size

The jqMobi engine weighs only 3741 bytes, just 1/10th of jQuery, and less than half of Zepto. Code size is important for user interactivity in mobile because heavier pages take longer to load and to initialize. The full jqMobi library with UI code is also tiny, at just 15K gZipped. By comparison, jQuery Mobile is 62K, and Sencha Touch weighs in at 99K.

Cross Platform Uniformity

jqMobi was designed and tested specifically to provide identical experiences to users on both dominant smartphone platforms. Android has been a particular point of failure for desktop frameworks. A short video contrasting common UI functions on both platforms using each of the frameworks is available at www.jqmobi.com.

jqMobi is offered free of charge as an open source asset under the MIT X11 license, starting with a short private beta testing period which begins today. appMobi encourages interested developers to stay up to date with jqMobi development by joining the email list at www.jqmobi.com. The development of jqMobi and maintenance of the JQMOBI.COM site are sponsored by appMobi.

About appMobi
A bold proponent of the open Web, appMobi’s development tools and cloud-based services build on HTML5, CSS and JavaScript, creating a unified, open ecosystem that competes favorably with “walled gardens” offered by Apple and Google. In 2011, the company released several of its core technologies as open source, including its cross platform mobile device API, mobiUs Web browser, and directCanvas HTML5 game acceleration.
SDK released for iOS HTML5 game acceleration, coming soon for Android

SAN FRANCISCO – MobilityWire® – December 19, 2011

HTML5 development powerhouse and open Web proponent, appMobi (www.appmobi.com), today released a software development kit (SDK) and detailed performance specs of its directCanvas technology. The directCanvas technology includes rendering acceleration, multiSound multichannel sound playback and directBox2D physics acceleration. appMobi created these technologies to eliminate performance and capability barriers that have hampered the growth of HTML5 and the open Web as the ultimate platform for mobile games.

The iOS version of directCanvas was released as open source in November, and today’s SDK release supports the use of directCanvas for HTML5 game development. In the first quarter of 2012, appMobi will release directCanvas for Android, which will speed HTML5 games on a multitude of popular new Android devices like Amazon’s Kindle Fire, Barnes & Noble’s Nook Tablet, Samsung Galaxy, Motorola Droid Razr and the HTC EVO 3D.

“We’ve switched all of our iOS games over to use appMobi’s technologies,” said Henrik Dalsgaard, CEO of TweenSoft, a leading HTML5 game developer. “directCanvas really does allow HTML5 games to perform like native games, even on older devices. The other advantage to us is that with HTML5 and appMobi, we can use the same code and build for iOS, Android and for the open mobile Web.”

directCanvas Delivers 10x Speed Improvement in Frame Rate for HTML5 Games

An accepted “rule of thumb” in the gaming industry is that animated games must refresh the screen at least 25 times (frames) per second to create the illusion of smooth motion. To accurately characterize directCanvas acceleration on iOS-based devices, appMobi ran a comprehensive battery of tests on a variety of devices and OS versions. The test results dramatically exceeded the company’s previous claims of a 5X speed improvement.

Using iOS Version 5, directCanvas provided an average 1800% acceleration on an iPhone 3GS.

On the iPhone 4, 1124% improvement was noted.

The dual core iPad 2 and iPhone 4S experienced slightly less acceleration, 728% and 1032%, respectively.

DirectCanvas – enhanced graphic rendering for 2D games

On older iOS versions, directCanvas provided up to 2000% frame rate acceleration.

Importantly, without directCanvas, none of Apple’s devices were able to deliver 25 frames per second using the unaccelerated Safari WebKit browser.

With appMobi’s directCanvas acceleration, iPhone 4S and iPad2 delivered 35-40 frames per second, while displaying up to 70 animated entities. directCanvas allowed the older iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4 to deliver over 25 frames per second while animating 50 entities. Full details of the tests and results are available at http://www.appmobi.com/directCanvasTest.

multiSound Provides Low Latency, Multichannel Sound for HTML5 Games

The HTML5 specification was not created as a game delivery platform, and it has a key limitation that has vexed mobile game developers – it can only play one sound at a time. appMobi’s multiSound API gives HTML5 game developers the ability to play as many simultaneous sounds as they wish, limited only by available memory. Designed for ultra-low latency, multiSound caches sound data in memory for instant, lag-free playback.

directBox2D Dramatically Accelerates Physics Calculations

Physics-based games perform many calculations to simulate gravity, inertia and perform collision detection. HTML5 games use JavaScript physics engines such as Box2D to perform these calculations. Because JavaScript is an interpreted language (rather than a compiled language), the extra interpretive processing slows frame rate and reduces the number of possible entities in a game. directBox2D accelerates these calculations 20X by using a high performance compiled physics engine in place of the interpreted one.

These three technologies work together to allow HTML5-based games to deliver the same immersive game experience that users expect from native apps: smooth physics animations, high frame rates and multichannel sound. To download the directCanvas iOS SDK or to get more information on high performance HTML5 game development, please visit http://www.appmobi.com/gamedev.

HTML5 source code released in Black Friday push includes mobiUs Web App Browser, Cross-Platform Device APIs, HTML5 Game Acceleration, and Offline User Experience

SAN FRANCISCO – MobilityWire® – November 22, 2011

HTML5 development powerhouse, appMobi (www.appmobi.com) today announced that on Black Friday (November 25) it will open source key elements of its mobile technology to further accelerate the industry’s migration to HTML5. The newly open sourced technology will include the appMobi cross-platform device APIs, which support HTML5 development for both Android and iOS platforms. appMobi will also release the source code for its much heralded “mobiUs” browser, which allows HTML5 Web apps to perform identically to native apps. The bounty of technology made available to HTML5 developers is rounded out with appMobi’s “DirectCanvas” technology, which accelerates HTML5 canvas rendering, physics calculations and sound by as much as 1500 percent, providing native performance to HTML5-based games.

“We believe in the open Web and the importance of an open environment for mobile apps and services,” said appMobi’s CTO, Sam Abadir. “To help advance the industry’s move from native apps to Web-based apps, we are sharing our mobile HTML5 knowledge with the global software development community. Among other benefits, the innovations in this open source release will improve the mobile Web experience through faster downloads, better offline usage and dramatic HTML5 game performance increases. An improved HTML5 user experience is the ‘rising tide that lifts all ships’ for open Web mobile developers, and we are happy to pour our technology into that harbor.”

The open source release of appMobi’s iOS XCode and Android Eclipse projects will be of particular benefit to developers who want to extend existing native apps with HTML5 tabs or views. For example, a developer can easily add a photo sharing feature to a native app by mixing appMobi’s enhanced PhoneGap with Facebook JavaScript APIs. With millions of existing JavaScript components and Web services, the possibilities are limitless.

appMobi will make the source code available this Friday, November 25, in the first ever Black Friday promotion specifically for HTML5 developers. These software projects will join appMobi’s previous open source releases at the GitHub repository. Developers who wish to download the source code can visit appMobi’s website at http://www.appmobi.com/opensource.

About appMobi
appMobi’s development tools and cloud-based services build on HTML5, CSS and JavaScript, creating a unified, open ecosystem that competes favorably with “walled gardens” offered by Apple and Google. appMobi’s technology allows mobile app developers to support HTML5 and native app platforms with just one code base, and to deploy and service their apps on multiple platforms, including the open Web.
“It’s About the Data, Stupid”

MINNEAPOLIS – MobilityWire® – November 3, 2011

2012 is not 2008. In 2000 all successful campaigns had a website. In 2008 all successful campaigns had a Facebook page. In 2010 all successful campaigns used Twitter and text. It’s 2012, and today, all successful campaigns need a mobile app.

Today, most mobile apps are just mini-version of web sites. Rather than just providing news and events about the campaign, mobile apps should provide tools and data that enable people to take action or solve a problem.

The versatility of a modern mobile app means it can collect analytics, target and track supporters, engage voters with social media, conduct polls and surveys and encourage people to vote on Election Day.

“It’s about the call to action,” said Chris Ruff, CEO of UIEvolution. “With the capabilities of mobile apps, we can now develop a tool that calls people to action and collects data for use by a business or campaign. Now that is a return on investment.”

“Advertising and messaging has changed. People no longer want to be talked at. They want to be a part of the conversation; especially in the political arena where they are frustrated and want real change,” said Cami Zimmer, President of Campaign Touch, a mobile strategy agency.

If campaigns want to be successful at reaching their targeted audience and have that message be favorably accepted, they need to remember this: 17% of consumers trust traditional advertising while 90% trust peer recommendations. A successful message today means pushing that message to your supporters who then virally push it to their peers.

“The 2012 election cycle will see wins and losses based on this pro-viral philosophy,” adds Zimmer.

Digital advertising was snubbed years ago, yet campaigns are now allocating 5-10% of marketing dollars for online advertising. Mobile apps and text messaging is here today and should be part of any 2012 winning strategy.

Some will argue and say their target audiences aren’t using smartphones. They are.

45 to 65 years olds are the fastest age range for smartphone adoption (Pew Research)

1 in 2 people will own a smartphone by the end of 2011.

Over 60% of moms have smartphones (eMarketer)

Over 59% of Americans households with an income of $75,000+ per year own at least one smartphone

Refusing to realize the magnitude of the mobile universe is dangerous, as most traditional campaigning is no longer reaching its desired audience. Today 30% of people don’t have a landline phone (Citi Investment Research), but robo-calls to landlines are still a principle component of any GOTV effort. And 31% of people don’t watch live TV, yet very expensive TV advertising is still popular.

While robo-calls and TV advertising are tried and true and still have an impact, so do mobile apps. In the 2010 cycle, the National Republican Senatorial Committee’s (NRSC) mobile app showed the following statistics:

Mobile ads had an average click through rate (CTR) of .23%, over double the CTR of an average digital campaign.

On Election Day 2010, mobile ads got a 6% higher click through rate than digital ads and were 39% cheaper.

On Election Day 2010, 65% of impressions and 67% of the clicks on the polling place ads were from mobile devices.

There was a staggering 20% click through rate on these ads.

What Can a Political Mobile App Really do?
If developed correctly, your mobile app should:

Provide immediate return on investment (ROI), providing valuable data on your voters and their peers

Enable the user to take an action – make a donation, find a place to vote, invite a friend to join

Engage and re-engage supporters with interactive communication and messaging

“For a campaign, what’s most important? DATA,” said Anthony Welcher of 21Strat Public Affairs. “Imagine the vast power of voter ID’s that cost you nothing but the inexpensive development of the app that can be used for Get Out The Vote (GOTV), data collection like who your supporters are, what they are interested in, if they plan to vote, if they voted, who they voted for, as well as alerts, text campaigns, viral messaging, surveys/polls and more.”

Politics is about the candidate, the message and the support. In the end, all that really matters is 50% plus one vote on Election Day. Over 50% of people will have a smartphone in their pocket or purse on Election Day. If you’re not in the mobile game now, you better hurry. The election is only one year away.

SAN FRANCISCO – MobilityWire® – October 31, 2011

appMobi (www.appmobi.com) today announced the immediate availability of mobiUs, the first-of-its-kind mobile Web App Browser developed specifically to run apps written in HTML5. mobiUs is a revolutionary new mobile browser that for the first time powers Web apps and even websites with the exact same capabilities as native apps from the app stores. mobiUs works either as a standalone mobile browser, or it can power Web apps and websites with full native app functionality from a person’s favorite mobile browser, such as the Safari browser for iPhone. mobiUs for iOS is available in the Apple App Store as a free app (http://www.appmobi.com/getmobiUs).

Until now, Web apps and websites have had limited capabilities, technically incapable of utilizing the great features that made smartphones so popular: gravity sensing, accelerometer, GPS, camera, sound and vibration, file system, and more. mobiUs integrates powerful APIs from PhoneGap and appMobi to give Web apps the same performance, look and feel as native apps. HTML5 Offline Caching lets mobiUs run Web apps even when network connectivity is unavailable. Once a Web app is bookmarked in mobiUs, the app is stored on the smartphone, so it loads instantly and can run with or without Internet connectivity, just like a native app.

mobiUs represents the state of the art in mobile browsing technology, with an optimized user experience that leverages new capabilities enabled by the emerging HTML5 standard, plus enhanced capabilities engineered by appMobi. Because gameplay accounts for a large percentage of the time people spend with their smartphones, appMobi has embedded its DirectCanvas HTML5 game acceleration technology within mobiUs. DirectCanvas supercharges the performance of a game’s physics calculation and screen drawing by an astounding 500 percent, making Web games played via mobiUs as fast and responsive as native app games.

“mobiUs is huge, with the power to disrupt everything you know about mobile apps, where you get them and how developers and publishers benefit from them,” says Sam Abadir, appMobi CTO. “What has been particularly exciting for us is the early interest in mobiUs from some of our game developer customers. Game developers always push technology to the absolute edge of its limitations in order to make entertaining, thrilling and compelling games, and they are finding the combination of mobiUs and appMobi’s GameDev XDK give them performance up to and even beyond the speed and capabilities of Adobe Flash.”

Key features of mobiUs include:

Mobile-optimized Web app caching for instant access to Web apps even when the device isn’t connected

DirectCanvas for supercharged game speed and performance

Web-based Push notifications for user engagement

Built-in eCommerce capability through appMobi’s 1Touch digital wallet technology

Mobile-optimized tabbed browsing

Full screen browsing

Orientation locking

In-app access to device hardware functionalities such as the accelerometer, GPS, compass, vibration, microphone, camera and more

If mobile users want to harness the power of mobiUs while continuing to use their favorite browser, they can. To invoke mobiUs, mobile app developers simply add an HTML tag to their Web app hyperlinks which allows their Web apps to run on a user’s device through any mobile browser.

Increasingly, smartphone apps utilize push notifications to send messages to users about something new that requires their attention. mobiUs is the first smartphone browser to enable push notifications for HTML5, giving Web apps the power of push notifications not just in the form of familiar text notifications, but with full multimedia messages powered by HTML5 that can include text, animations, audio and video messages.

mobiUs also includes appMobi’s breakthrough 1Touch digital wallet technology, allowing developers to include a single click payment process within their Web apps. 1Touch users avoid the privacy and security risks associated with storing personal financial information like credit card numbers and addresses in large, at-risk databases in the cloud, susceptible to massive hacks and security breaches. Instead, 1Touch securely stores encrypted credit card information on the device, only decrypted when purchases are made.

The mobiUs browser makes the mobile Web far more immersive by allowing Web developers to access all of the functions that native apps can access, effectively creating the performance of a native app in a mobile website. Viewed in mobiUs, mobile sites are able to make use of device functionalities such as the accelerometer, GPS, compass, vibration, microphone, camera and more.

“With mobiUs on the scene, the ‘walled garden’ is now a public space,” says Abadir. “There are many good reasons why app publishers might still want to use the walled garden app stores, but for the first time, mobiUs gives them a real choice between distributing by app store or the open Web. The appMobi platform and mobiUs allow any HTML5 developer to create and market mobile apps on the open Web that are indistinguishable from native apps in performance and functionality. mobiUs truly empowers Web apps and opens up the entire World Wide Web as the new app store.”

mobiUs includes demonstration Web apps that illustrate its power and functionality. As the leading HTML5 development platform, appMobi has long provided tools and cloud services that allow HTML5 to compete with native smartphone operating systems on a level playing field. Developers who wish to publish with mobiUs can use the mobiUs SDK (http://www.appmobi.com/mobiUsSDK) and appMobi’s free XDK HTML5 development tool. MobiUs for iOS is available today in the Apple App Store as a free app (http://www.appmobi.com/getmobiUs). mobiUs for Android will be available Q1 2012.

PhoneGap XDK lets developers create high powered mobile apps that use smartphone features and run across multiple mobile platforms including HTML5

SAN FRANCISCO – MobilityWire® – October 17, 2011

HTML5 development powerhouse, appMobi (www.appmobi.com), today announced the immediate availability of its new PhoneGap Mobile App XDK (X-platform Development Kit), which fully supports the open source PhoneGap mobile app development framework, recently recommended by Facebook as the preferred way to create mobile apps for the Facebook Platform.

appMobi’s PhoneGap XDK is the only integrated development environment (IDE) that fully integrates the open source PhoneGap platform, offering a suite of desktop development tools for creating mobile, HTML5 and PhoneGap based apps. The PhoneGap XDK includes desktop debugging of mobile apps, emulation of mobile devices, hardware emulation of GPS, camera, contacts, and accelerometer inputs, even remote testing anywhere in the world using a free “test container” app. Developers can download the PhoneGap XDK immediately at http://www.appmobi.com/PhoneGapXDK.

“PhoneGap has developed into a wonderful set of APIs, but a matching IDE has really been missing. We’ve brought the PhoneGap community a free development suite that unleashes the capabilities of the PhoneGap APIs so that developers can create amazing apps,” said appMobi CTO, Sam Abadir. “With the PhoneGap XDK, PhoneGap developers can create cross platform mobile apps without the need to own and set up complex native tool chains such as XCode for iOS or the Android SDK. This tool dramatically reduces the code-debug cycle time for PhoneGap programmers.”

Although it is a full IDE with a built in editor, the PhoneGap XDK easily integrates with Adobe DreamWeaver 5.5, NotePad++ or any other popular programming editor, so there’s no learning curve to scale before being productive. appMobi provides cloud-based services to complete HTML5 as a mobile platform solution, making it a valid mobile platform on par with iOS and Android. appMobi’s PhoneGap XDK also allows developers to easily add features that do not exist in PhoneGap but are considered essential to commercial apps, such as in-app payments, push messaging, user analytics and live app updates.

The PhoneGap XDK runs on Mac, PC and Linux platforms. appMobi is making this development tool available for free. Developers can download it at http://www.appmobi.com/PhoneGapXDK.

Impact GameDev XDK is a one-stop-shop for both entry level and expert developers to create eye-popping Web-based mobile games

LANCASTER, Penn. – MobilityWire® – September 22, 2011

appMobi® and ImpactJS today announced the immediate availability of the Impact GameDev XDK™. Available as a free download from the Google Chrome Web Store http://www.appmobi.com/GetGameDev), the Impact GameDev XDK provides a visual toolkit for the rapid development and monetization of mobile HTML5 games.

The new Impact GameDev XDK features HTML5 graphics acceleration based on appMobi’s DirectCanvas™ and DirectBox2D™ technologies which accelerate the HTML5 canvas element and physics emulation, speeding graphic rendering by up to an astounding 15 times normal. The speed enhancements achieved through the Impact GameDev XDK make HTML5 suitable for programming any type of mobile game.

Developers will use the Impact GameDev XDK to program a single code base and publish apps to a variety of platforms , including Native iOS, Native Android, Facebook (and Project Spartan), Google Chrome App, and mobile Web app. The Impact GameDev XDK, itself built in HTML5, makes it easier than ever for developers of all skill levels – even entry level JavaScript developers – to create great mobile games, without any knowledge of HTML5.

Since its introduction at the E3 Game show in June, appMobi’s HTML5 game development technology has attracted hundreds of HTML5 game developers to its beta program, with games employing DirectCanvas already available in the Apple App Store. “Private Joe,” a popular HTML5 shooter game with 150,000 users on desktop PC’s, turned to appMobi when its developer found HTML5 in standard mobile browsers to be too slow.

“We were already working with appMobi’s XDK to create an iOS version of Private Joe,” said Ben Chong, CEO of HotBazooka games (www.hotbazooka.com). “When we switched to DirectCanvas, the gameplay became indistinguishable from other native iOS games on both the iPad and iPhone4.”

The DirectCanvas accelerated version of Private Joe is currently featured in the Apple App Store (http://itunes.com/apps/privatejoe)

ImpactJS is widely considered the leading HTML5 canvas-based JavaScript engine. The company has won industry accolades from insiders and reviewers who have called the ImpactJS game engine the “first truly professional grade” game engine, designed by a company that “understands game development.” appMobi has partnered with ImpactJS to provide the Impact GameDev XDK as a way to jump start game developers who want to leap on the HTML5 trend with a set of preconfigured best-of-breed tools that are ready for rapid game development. Games developed with the Impact GameDev XDK will have native graphics speed, in-app purchasing and multimedia push notifications.

“HTML5 mobile games can be every bit as good as those available from the Apple App Store – and they should make just as much money for their developers too,” said appMobi CTO, Sam Abadir. “appMobi partnered with ImpactJS because, quite frankly, their game engine rocks. The combination of appMobi’s XDK, mobile Web services and DirectCanvas technology, together with the ImpactJS game engine will give even novice developers all the tools they need to create compelling, superior mobile games. Game developers will find this new toolkit to be a really compelling offering, especially if they are looking to HTML5 as a way to break free from the ‘taxation’ and fees of native app stores.”

The appMobi XDK is the leading mobile HTML5 development environment with over 25,000 mobile Web developers and over 45,000 mobile Web apps created.

This deal marks the first in which appMobi has partnered with another development vendor to bring a superior hybrid set of tools to a niche development market. appMobi is working with other specialized vendors to deliver similar tools to make development of mobile and Web-based apps as simple and rewarding as possible for developers of all levels.

The appMobi GameDev XDK is available immediately as a free download in the Google Chrome Web Store (http://www.appmobi.com/GetGameDev).

About appMobi
appMobi offers the world’s most popular HTML5 development tool stack, which is adopted by more than 1,000 new developers worldwide per day. appMobi believes the open Web is a better marketplace for mobile apps than manufacturer-owned private “app stores.” The company’s development tools and cloud-based services build on HTML5, CSS and JavaScript, creating a unified, open ecosystem that competes favorably with “walled gardens.” appMobi’s tools allow mobile app developers to create one code base to deploy and service their apps on multiple platforms, including the open Web.
