Monday, February 15th, 2010

Twitter

BOLT Mobile Browser Gets Enhanced Capabilities for Its First Birthday

Sunday, February 14th, 2010

Bitstream unveils the most fully featured mobile browser ever for mobile phones of all types with support for widgets, international localization and many other new features at Mobile World Congress

BOLT Mobile Browser

Exactly one year after its public debut, Bitstream Inc. (NASDAQ: BITS) today announced a new version of the BOLT™ Mobile Browser, which makes the lightning fast uncompromised browsing experience for phones of all types even better with new features and enhancements. The 1.7 release of BOLT offers increased functionality and usability, with new features including direct Twitter integration, Spanish and Russian language support, an enhanced download manager, increased streaming video features and the ability to run widgets. Bitstream is showcasing BOLT 1.7 to OEMs and carriers at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona from February 15 to February 18 in booth number 1A70.

As BOLT marks its first anniversary, the acclaimed mobile browser has surpassed 4 million users, streamed over 135 million minutes of video (equivalent to 256 years if played back to back), served more than 512 million pages – as many as 3 million pages per day, and downloaded more than 132 terabytes of data – an amount that’s double the size of the entire digital collection of the U.S. Library of Congress.

“The past year was both exciting and intense as BOLT’s developers learned what features were most important to its users, and how desired features would mesh with manufacturing trends in mobile handsets and the evolution of the Internet,” said Anna Magliocco-Chagnon, president and CEO of Bitstream. “Before we launched BOLT we knew that Bitstream engineers and developers built a remarkable foundation on which we could continue to evolve the BOLT mobile browser, and the positive support and constant feedback we received from a great many of our 4 million helped us prioritize the features and enhancements in each successive release. But as excited as we were for the first year of BOLT, the next year promises to be more dynamic as we plan to introduce features that took longer to engineer and we add more handset manufacturers to the roster of those preloading BOLT on mobile phones.”

International Localization
With BOLT being used by people in more than 100 countries, Bitstream has added language support so more users can use BOLT with a user interface in their own language. The 1.7 version of BOLT now includes options for English, Spanish and Russian languages.

Widgets
Although BOLT already runs web-based applications written in Ajax, Javascript and other Web programming languages, such as the popular Facebook game Mafia Wars and Google Docs, BOLT 1.7 is adding widget functionality. Now in beta, BOLT widgets allow users to install small self-contained Web applications that run directly from within BOLT. Because these widgets are installed directly within BOLT they load and execute faster than website-based applications, giving users a wider variety of utility for their mobile phones. BOLT users can discover, select and install specific Web apps through a BOLT Widget Gallery. BOLT’s widgets are written as standard W3C widgets (www.w3.org/TR/widgets/), a standard with broad industry support.

Twitter Integration
One of the new enhancements to BOLT is an easier way to post tweets to Twitter. BOLT 1.7 has integrated Twitter capabilities into the browser itself. Now users can post tweets directly from BOLT while they browse the Web.

Usability Enhancements
BOLT 1.7 now features keypad shortcuts that make zooming in and out of Web content as simple as a click of a button. Users can now scale text and images without having to change the zoom presets in their preferences.

BOLT is the only mobile browser for all types of mobile phones to support streaming video from multiple video sharing websites such as YouTube, Yahoo, Google, RuTube, MySpace and more. Now users can watch videos posted in CNN and ESPN, as well as watch embedded YouTube videos on any website.

For users on networks that support socket connections, BOLT v1.7 now offers automatic socket support resulting in a 15 percent speed increase for most users. Previous versions of BOLT offered socket support that had to be manually configured by the user.

BOLT 1.7 features an upgraded download manager that supports multiple simultaneous downloads as well as the ability to pause and restart an active download.

Milestones

BOLT was launched as a public beta on February 16, 2009, and has been widely acclaimed since then. Frequently named a “must have” download and consistently receiving rave product reviews, BOLT has achieved a number of important milestones, including:

  • Outscoring competing mobile browsers by earning a perfect 100 percent on the Web Standards Project’s Acid3 test, meaning BOLT offers the most accurate website rendering
  • Installed more than 4 million times in more than 100 countries
  • Supporting thousands of different handset makes and models
  • Streaming over 130 million minutes of video
  • Serving 132 terabytes of data
  • Selected by handset manufacturers in Europe and Asia to be the default browser preloaded on new lines of mobile phones

BOLT’s Unique Capabilities include:

  • Best of breed page load speeds
  • Most accurate page rendering
  • Best of breed data compression
  • Displays full websites just as they would appear on desktop computers
  • Streams videos from popular video services such as YouTube
  • Copy and paste text
  • Uploads video and photo files directly to websites from browser
  • Only major WebKit based cloud computing browser
  • FOTA updates
  • Six levels of magnification

Recognizing that some mobile phones currently in use cannot support the full size application and some network providers limit the size of application downloads, Bitstream also offers a light version of the BOLT mobile browser, BOLT LiteTM. BOLT Lite contains all the essential features of the BOLT mobile browser, retaining BOLT’s feature-rich functionality, best-of-breed download speeds and desktop PC-style page layout in a smaller package optimized for entry-level devices.

BOLT and BOLT Lite are both available for free download at http://boltbrowser.com.

This fast mobile browser quickly and accurately displays Web pages on mobile phones just as they would appear on desktop computers. Expanded BOLT Mobile Browser OEM Edition Now Available

Tuesday, February 9th, 2010

Bitstream mobile browsing solution provides handset manufacturers and wireless operators the easiest way to provide the most accurate website rendering to users of mobile phones of all types

BOLT Mobile Browser

Bitstream Inc. (NASDAQ: BITS) today announced availability of an expanded OEM solution for its acclaimed BOLT™ mobile browser, the most fully featured mobile browser in the market today. This new BOLT OEM edition is a major evolution of the company’s Thunderhawk mobile browsing technology and architecture. Bitstream has optimized the BOLT browser application and the WebKit-based, cloud-computing architecture that supports it to make the BOLT OEM edition the easiest way for handset manufacturers and wireless operators to offer their customers desktop style Web browsing on mobile phones of all types. Bitstream will be meeting with OEMs interested in the BOLT mobile browser at the Mobile World Congress tradeshow in Barcelona this month.

“In the last twelve months since Bitstream unveiled BOLT we’ve been able to complete a worldwide public beta testing and watched carefully as the browser was downloaded over 3.8 million times, making refinements and further optimizing the BOLT OEM edition,” said Anna Magliocco-Chagnon, president and CEO. “Since we launched BOLT at last year’s Mobile World Congress, it has won industry awards and more importantly, praise from users and in application reviews. BOLT is now being preloaded by mobile device manufacturers in Europe and Asia, and Bitstream is receiving interest from device manufacturers and wireless operators around the world.”

The BOLT OEM edition is licensed to carriers and manufacturers in four packages:

  • As the BOLT J2ME client browser
  • As the BOLT lite™ J2ME client browser, a smaller application package for extremely resource-constrained devices that retains all primary BOLT functionality
  • As the J2ME BOLT library SDK
  • Other platforms are also available upon request

BOLT is the only mobile browser that brings video streaming from multiple video websites to mobile phones of all types. BOLT 1.6 outscores competing mobile browsers, earning a perfect 100 percent on the Web Standards Project’s Acid3 test. The most fully featured mobile browser, BOLT’s Unique Capabilities include:

  • Extremely fast page load speeds
  • Most accurate page rendering
  • Displays full websites just as they would appear on desktop computers
  • Streams videos from popular video services such as YouTube
  • Copy and paste text
  • Uploads video and photo files directly to websites from browser
  • Only major WebKit based cloud computing browser

BOLT’s cloud computing architecture is the key to the browser’s capabilities. Websites are first loaded by the BOLT servers, then transcoded and sent to the BOLT mobile browser application on handsets. This client/server approach maintains the integrity of Web page layouts, reduces packet consumption on data networks by as much as a factor of 24:1, dramatically improves page load speeds, and enables important features such as video streaming.

Handset manufacturers around the world are now preloading BOLT on new lines of mobile phones. The BOLT OEM edition allows handset manufacturers and wireless operators to maintain control over updates and feature sets, and can be offered in a white-labeled user interface. The lightweight BOLT application is easily preloaded by device manufacturers, and Bitstream takes care of the rest.

“BOLT was chosen over competing mobile browsers because it perfectly displays Web pages on Allview phones the way people see them on their computers,” said Adrian Visan, development manager at AllviewMobile, one of Eastern Europe’s biggest mobile handset manufacturers. “BOLT is not only very fast and easy to use, it’s the only browser for mobile phones that streams videos from websites popular in Europe such as YouTube and RuTube. BOLT’s data compression not only assures that websites load quickly, it helps reduce the cost of browsing the Web for users of Allview phones, and has even been shown to extend battery life between recharging.”

Bitstream will be showcasing BOLT at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona from February 15 to February 18 in booth number 1A70.

Wednesday, January 6th, 2010

Bitstream’s BOLT mobile browser finishes 2009 with 3.3 million downloads, 109 million minutes of streaming video and an impressive list of industry accolades

BOLT Mobile Browser

Bitstream Inc. (NASDAQ: BITS) announced today its BOLT™ mobile browser finished 2009 with more than 3.3 million downloads and rendered more than 380 million Web pages. Debuting in beta from Mobile World Congress in February 2009, BOLT capped off a spectacular inaugural year with a long list of industry accolades and handset manufacture deals as proof points to its growing success.

“Bitstream’s further expansion into the mobile browser space via BOLT can be counted as a success by all measures,” said Anna Chagnon, Bitstream president and CEO. “With BOLT, Bitstream delivered a high quality product that immediately became a fan favorite. Bitstream listened to user feedback and made incremental improvements over the course of 2009, earning BOLT even more good favor with its users, and attracting the attention of handset manufactures who are preloading BOLT as the default mobile browser on new devices they are building. While Bitstream toasts to a successful 2009, the company is looking forward to an even more flourishing 2010.”

BOLT delivers the most faithful page rendering of any mobile browserBOLT is exiting 2009 with an average download rate of nearly 10,000 accounts created daily by people all over the world. The BOLT mobile browser is compatible with the majority of the world’s 4 billion mobile phones and is built on a WebKit architecture that offers the most accurate desktop-style page rendering of any mobile browser. With advanced features such as the ability to stream video from the most popular video websites, copy and paste, upload files such as photos and videos to websites, manage passwords and order and arrange favorites into custom folders, BOLT is also the most fully-featured mobile browser available on the market today.

In 2009, people worldwide discovered BOLT’s enhanced browsing experience led them to spend more and more time surfing the Web from their mobile phones. In addition to social networking, search, web-based email and video websites are top ten destinations for BOLT users all around the world.

People particularly enjoy the video streaming feature of the BOLT browser. BOLT, the only Web browser that lets people view streaming video from a wide variety of video websites on mobile phones of all types, transcoded and streamed more than 109 million minutes of video in 2009 – that’s more than 206 years worth of continuous video.

In its first year, BOLT earned a number of industry accolades, including:

During the recent BlackBerry outages in December 2009 many BlackBerry users were happy to find that they could still use their smartphones with BOLT to tweet, surf the Web, and stay connected, while those users without BOLT were left completely disconnected.

BOLT has also received several accolades for its strong support of entry-level feature phones, including being named #2 on Appboy’s list of 2009’s top 10 free mobile Apps and being named the best mobile browser for LG feature phones by Wireless and Mobile News.

Monday, October 12th, 2009

New Web browser for your mobile phone is the fastest way to surf with slick features for viewing video, social networking and sharing files

BOLT Mobile Browser

Bitstream Inc. (NASDAQ: BITS), announced today the commercial availability of BOLTTM 1.5, the fastest mobile Web browser for mobile phones of all types. After eight months of testing that saw previous versions of BOLT downloaded millions of times all around the world, Bitstream unleashed today the fastest, most fully-featured mobile browser available anywhere. The new BOLT 1.5 mobile browser is free to download to your mobile phone from http://boltbrowser.com, bringing desktop-style Web browsing to mobile phones of all types.

ESPN on BOLTFrom simple cell phones to BlackBerry smartphones, BOLT delivers advanced browsing features like the ability to zoom in and out of Web pages, cut and paste text from a Web page, adjust the viewing magnification up to four times the normal size, post videos and photos to your favorite websites and even stream videos from popular sites like YouTube and MySpace.

“The browser on my mobile phone was terrible,” said Josh, a high school student in Southern California. “I hated using it because it was slow and it forced me to look at mobile versions of websites that didn’t show all of the features and details of the site that I wanted to see. BOLT gives me the full website, just like my brother has on his iPhone, but I can watch videos, instant message my friends on Facebook and see the Web I want to see, without having to use my computer. BOLT is awesome!”

Facebook Mafia Wars application on BOLTSurfing the Web with the BOLT browser also means you’ll eat up less data from your data plan than with competing browsers because BOLT uses a special compression technology to conserve resources.

“We know painfully slow mobile browsing speeds are one of the biggest discouragements for people who want to surf the Web from their phones,” says Anna Chagnon, Bitstream CEO. “We designed BOLT with the average user in mind, and focused on fixing the issues where mobile browsing fell short in the user’s experience. BOLT delivered from day one with industry leading speed and a feature set that people couldn’t previously get on a regular mobile phone. And with our commercial launch today we’ve raised that bar even higher, bringing more speed and a feature set that users are going to love.”

Faster, More Fully-Featured BOLT Browser Blasts Out of Beta

Wednesday, October 7th, 2009

Fastest, most fully-featured Web browser for mobile phones of all types completes eight months of beta testing as Bitstream makes available its new faster, more capable version 1.5

BOLT Mobile Browser

Bitstream Inc. (NASDAQ: BITS) today announced its first commercial release of the BOLTTM mobile browser, ending eight months of public beta testing that saw the browser downloaded more than 2 million times, rendering in excess of 200 million Web pages. Building on the user experiences and feedback from beta users in more than 190 countries and territories around the world, the company is today making available version 1.5, its fastest, most capable mobile browser to date.

BOLT displaying cnn.com in split screen modeBOLT displays full Web pages just as they appear on desktop computers. In comprehensive speed testing of a variety of Web pages from different websites, BOLT was routinely 25 to 50 percent faster than the next fastest mobile browser. With advanced features like the ability to stream video from the most popular video websites, copy and paste, upload files such as photos and videos to websites, and order and arrange favorites into custom folders, BOLT is also the most fully-featured mobile browser. Built in J2ME and able to operate on phones of all types, BOLT can work on an estimated 3 billion phones already in the market. A version of BOLT created specifically for BlackBerry smartphones includes all the features of BOLT but also includes default BlackBerry shortcuts and optimizations.

“Eight months ago at Mobile World Congress when we first made BOLT available, we had no set date for when we would emerge from beta,” said Anna Chagnon, president and CEO of Bitstream. “We were focused on one mission: building the most capable Web browser that could transform virtually any mobile device into a practical Internet tool. We owe a big debt of gratitude to the loyal BOLT end users who provided invaluable feedback and helped us build for them and others what we believe to be a truly important mobile application.”

Built with proprietary compression, navigation and rendering technologies, BOLT enables users to find and read information quickly and easily. Once users have navigated to the specific section of the large Web page they are viewing, they can then zoom in to display clear text and images that look crisp on even small mobile phone screens or low-end phones. Employing the Webkit 4.0 rendering and layout engine, BOLT offers users the most accurate rendering of complex Web pages available on mobile phones.

The new BOLT 1.5 includes all the features in previous beta versions plus important new features and service enhancements to improve reliability, usability and speed.

BOLT’s beta feature set included:

  • Fast, secure, desktop-style web browsing on both high-end and low-end handsets
  • Streaming video capabilities
  • Split screen and full screen modes for easy navigation and viewing
  • Easily add and select favorites and view browsing history
  • Intuitive keystroke shortcuts for easier navigation and content selection
  • Protection against spyware and malicious or faulty add-ons
  • 23:1 compression uses less data than competing browsers

New features and enhancements to BOLT 1.5 include:

  • Cache Support to speed users’ ability to move quickly back and forth between the currently and previously viewed Web pages through the use of backward and forward navigation.
  • Download Manager for easy download of files directly from BOLT and the ability to save them to specific folders on the mobile phone (requires JSR75 support on the device).
  • Support for Streaming Videos of Any Length that overcomes limitations on some phones’ ability to stream videos of longer lengths. The new approach ensures video clips will play on all devices, for any length video.
  • Video Wizard to assist users in configuring their device for optimal video playback.
  • Dedicated Search Bar on home page, for easier and faster online searches.
  • Improved Ability to Manage RSS Feeds by allowing users to arrange and file feeds just as they do with their favorites and bookmarks.
  • Enhancements for Touch Screen Devices such as simple volume controls for the BOLT media player which now offers volume controls on the screen.
  • Enhancements for BOLT Servers in the cloud, which increase the already fast BOLT mobile browser by an additional 10 to 20 percent.

A complete list of the features and information about BOLT 1.5 can be found at http://boltbrowser.com.

Bitstream added more behind-the-scenes enhancements to BOLT and its rendering servers to improve the company’s ability to quickly add new functionality or extend support and management capabilities to mobile operators and handset manufacturers.
Also emerging from beta testing is BOLT LiteTM, the newest member of the BOLT family, introduced in June 2009 along with the third and final version of the BOLT beta. Recognizing that some mobile phones currently in use cannot support robust applications and some network providers limit the size of application downloads, Bitstream created a new light version of the BOLT mobile browser. BOLT lite contains all the essential features of the BOLT mobile browser, retaining BOLT’s feature-rich functionality, best-of-breed download speeds and desktop PC-style page layout. BOLT Lite’s 150KB package has been optimized for entry-level devices by eliminating BOLT’s non-critical features such as landscape and portrait orientation settings, inline videos, transport protocol settings, copy-paste operations, favorites organization, inline editing, find in page feature, and 3XL magnification.

BOLT and BOLT Lite are both available for free download at:
http://boltbrowser.com.
