eVIA Ecosystem Addresses Rising Demand for VOD and nDVR Multiscreen Services

At IBC 2012, RGB Networks, the leading provider of scalable multiscreen IP video delivery solutions, will highlight its on-demand multiscreen offering. A critical component of RGB’s Enhanced Video Intelligence Architecture (eVIA), this on-demand solution complements RGB’s solution for live video delivery to multiple screens, and meets the evolving requirements of TV Everywhere deployments.

Consumer demand for multiscreen delivery is growing rapidly and video service providers (VSPs) are racing to provide comprehensive TV Everywhere services to satisfy their subscribers’ needs. According to research from Nielsen , time-shifted TV continues to grow in importance, and as such it is now becoming a key component of any TV Everywhere offering. However, additional services such as these are putting a huge strain on VSPs’ storage requirements owing to the need to create multiple versions of each program, as well as the need to save copies of every version in various streaming protocols. Therefore VSPs are being forced to dramatically increase their storage capacity as they add new programs to their TV Everywhere video-on-demand (VOD) and network digital video recorder (nDVR) libraries.

Addressing this problem, RGB offers a complete on-demand multiscreen solution which encompasses the capabilities of several RGB eVIA products and technologies, working together to meet a full range of on-demand requirements:

  • The “just-in-time” packaging capability of RGB’s TransAct Packager enables VSPs to save costly storage and future-proof their on-demand multiscreen deployments by creating a set of mezzanine format video files that can then be packaged later for just-in-time delivery. This approach is very cost-effective for less popular content or for consumer devices with specific encapsulation protocol requirements.
  • RGB’s TransAct Encoder/Transcoder performs file-to-file transcoding, enabling VSPs to transcode all VOD content into every bitrate and resolution required for delivery to end user devices. Output formats can be “pre-packaged” for frequently requested content or left in mezzanine format and made available for just-in-time packaging
  • RGB’s Video Multiprocessing Gateway (VMG) and TransAct Packager combine to enable live capture for time-shifted TV. The Packager’s recording function performs standards-compliant asset preparation for nDVR applications, again available “pre-packaged” or in mezzanine format for just-in-time packaging.

“Time- and place-shifting are important consumer trends, and making multiscreen on-demand solutions available for mobile and PC devices alongside live content is an integral part of meeting subscriber needs,” said Nabil Kanaan, Sr. Director, Product Marketing for RGB Networks. “RGB’s on-demand multiscreen solution enables video service providers to offer their subscribers comprehensive and flexible VOD and nDVR services on any IP-enabled device.”

RGB will be demonstrating the application of its multiscreen on-demand encoding, transcoding and packaging solution at IBC, September 7-11, 2012 in Amsterdam. RGB executives will be available during the show at stand #4.C78 to discuss the benefits of this solution and how it better equips VSPs to meet the evolving multiscreen requirements.
